Abstract On August 8, 1974, President Richard Nixon announced that he would resign from office, effective the next day. Nixon's involvement in the 1972 Watergate scandal had precipitated impeachment hearings, which the president was eager to avoid. Although Nixon admitted to "bad judgments"; undertaken in the best interest of the nation, he did not admit that he had committed any crime.
