Contents Richard Nixon Describes Early Investigation of Watergate Allegations (Part 2) ca. 1973 (1:41)
Abstract On June 17, 1972, five men connected with the Committee to Re-Elect the President (CREEP) broke in to the Democratic Party national headquarters at the Watergate complex. The five, along with G. Gordon Liddy and E. Howard Hunt, were convicted of conspiracy, burglary, and eavesdropping charges on January 30, 1973. Further investigation revealed White House involvement and an attempted cover-up. On April 30 White House advisors John Dean, H.R. Haldeman, and John D. Ehrlichman resigned. In May televised hearings began in the Senate and the House Judiciary Committee recommended impeaching Nixon. Under pressure of criminal conviction on August 9, 1974, President Nixon became the first U.S. president to resign. He was succeeded by Vice President Ford; Ford pardoned Nixon of all charges in September 1974.
