Contents Richard and Pat Nixon Visit China ca. 1972 (1:04)
Abstract President Nixon's policy of detente helped to positively transform United States relations with China and the Soviet Union. In February 1972 Nixon became the first United States president to visit Communist China. As part of his five-day tour, he met with Premier Zhou Enlai and Chairman Mao Zedong; the trip was broadcast on American television. In May 1972 Nixon followed up with a trip to the Soviet Union. Despite Nixon's "opening" of China, the U.S. did not officially recognize the Peoples' Republic of China until 1979.
