The exhibition aligns work by such diverse artists as Charles Sheeler, Christina Ramberg, and Matt Mullican with both historic folk art and works by self-taught artists ranging from Horace Pippin to Janet Sobel and Joseph Yoakum. It also examines a recent influx of radically expressive work made on the margins that redefined the boundaries of the mainstream art world, while challenging the very categories of "outsider" and "self-taught." Historicizing the shifting identity and role of this distinctly American version of modernism's "other," the exhibition probes assumptions about creativity, artistic practice, and the role of the artist in contemporary culture. The exhibition is curated by Lynne Cooke, senior curator, special projects in modern art, National Gallery of Art.--Provided by publisher. 650 0 Outsider art |zUnited States |vExhibitions. |=^A379602 650 0 Art, American |y19th century |vExhibitions. |=^A540671 650 0 Art, American |y20th century |vExhibitions. |=^A72577 650 0 Folk art |zUnited States |xHistory |vExhibitions. |=^A29950 650 0 Art and society |zUnited States |xHistory |vExhibitions. |=^A30365 650 7 Art, American. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00815895 650 7 Art and society. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00815432 650 7 Folk art. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00928587 650 7 Outsider art. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01049257 651 7 United States. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01204155 |?UNAUTHORIZED 648 7 1800-1999 |2fast 655 7 Exhibition catalogs. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01424028 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 655 7 Exhibition catalogs. |2gmgpc 710 2 National Gallery of Art (U.S.) |epublisher. |=^A35795 710 2 University of Chicago. |bPress, |epublisher. |=^A13111 949 |i30372016647940 |ojjlm 960 |o1 |s65.00 |tJoyner48 |uJAPP |zUSD 596 1 998 4851668
