As an African American woman, she broke barriers of race and gender, most notably as the founder of an important dance company. She influenced generations of performers for years to come, from Alvin Ailey to Marlon Brando to Eartha Kitt. Dunham was also one of the first choreographers to conduct anthropological research about dance and translate her findings for the theatrical stage. Katherine Dunham: Dance and the African Diaspora makes the argument that Dunham was more than a dancer-she was an intellectual and activist committed to using dance to fight for racial justice. Dunham saw dance as a tool of liberation, as a way for people of African descent to reclaim their history and forge a new future. She put her theories into motion not only through performance, but also through education, scholarship, travel, and choices about her own life. Author Joanna Dee Das examines how Dunham struggled to balance artistic dreams, personal desires, economic needs, and political commitments in the face of racism and sexism. The book analyzes Dunham's multiple spheres of engagement, assessing her dance performances as a form of black feminist protest while also presenting new material about her schools in New York and East St. Louis, her work in Haiti, and her network of interlocutors that included figures as diverse as ballet choreographer George Balanchine and Senegalese president Leopold Sedar Senghor." -- Provided by the publisher. |cProvided by publisher. 600 10 Dunham, Katherine. |=^A17545 600 17 Dunham, Katherine. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00034303 |?UNAUTHORIZED 600 17 Dunham, Katherine, |d1909-2006. |2gnd |?UNAUTHORIZED 650 0 Dancers |zUnited States |vBiography. |=^A445064 650 0 Women dancers |zUnited States |vBiography. |=^A1280950 650 0 African American dancers |vBiography. |=^A532469 650 0 Anthropologists |zUnited States |vBiography. |=^A435403 650 0 African American anthropologists |vBiography. |=^A408552 650 7 BIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY |xEntertainment & Performing Arts. |2bisacsh 650 7 PERFORMING ARTS |xDance |xModern. |2bisacsh 650 7 African American anthropologists. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00799008 650 7 African American dancers. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00799133 650 7 Anthropologists |xBiography. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00810187 650 7 Dancers. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00887581 650 7 Women dancers. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01177550 651 7 United States. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01204155 |?UNAUTHORIZED 650 7 Choreografin. |2gnd 650 7 Schwarze. |2gnd 650 7 Tänzerin. |2gnd 651 7 USA. |2gnd |?UNAUTHORIZED 655 7 Biography. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01423686 949 |i30372016652890 |ojjlm 960 |o1 |s34.95 |tJoyner48 |uJTHA |zUSD 596 1 998 4791634
