Just as the newly-minted paper money was struggling to express its value, so do Austen's minor female characters struggle to assert their intrinsic value within a marketplace that expresses their worth as bearers of dowries. Austen's minor female characters expose the plight of women who settle for transactional marriages, become speculators and predators, or become superfluous women who left the marriage market and battle for personal significance and existence. These characters illustrate the ambiguity of value within the marriage market economy, exposing women's limited choices. This book employs a socio-historical framework, considering the rise of a competitive consume economy juxtaposed with affective individualism. 600 10 Austen, Jane, |d1775-1817 |xCharacters |xWomen. |=^A60297 600 17 Austen, Jane, |d1775-1817. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00032929 |?UNAUTHORIZED 600 10 Austen, Jane, |d1775-1817 |xCriticism and interpretation. |=^A17916 650 0 English fiction |xWomen authors |xHistory and criticism. |=^A75213 650 0 English fiction |y19th century |xHistory and criticism. |=^A33712 650 0 Women in literature. |=^A27561 650 0 Women and literature |zGreat Britain. |=^A121473 650 7 British. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00839044 650 7 Characters and characteristics in literature. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00852295 650 7 Women |xIdentity. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01176807 650 7 Women in literature. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01177912 650 7 Women |xPsychology. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01176894 648 7 1700-1799 |2fast 949 |i30372016643089 |ojjlm 960 |o1 |s99.99 |tJoyner48 |uJAPP |zUSD 596 1 998 4747818
