Abstract Like so many aspects of the American Civil War, the gathering of intelligence went through an extraordinary evolution between the years 1861 and 1865. Initially neither the North nor the South had an established espionage network, but it became clear even before the war commenced that clandestine activities would have a tremendous impact on both sides. This is the story of Civil War spies.
