Abstract | Written to fill the need for a truly comprehensive text on hymnody, the author's book offers a complete course in the subject. Unlike other textbooks on hymnody, all of which confine themselves to a treatment of tunes or texts, this provides a well-balanced treatment of both. It also provides a concise but complete history of hymnody, tracing and evaluating it from earliest beginnings to present-day usage. A unique section contains 160 hymns and tunes compiled from the hymnals of seven major Protestant denominations. Ordinarily, classroom study of so large and diverse a collection would involve the use of at least a dozen hymnals. Designed specifically as a basic text in hymnody courses offered by seminaries and colleges, this versatile book eliminates the need for innumerable supplementary texts. |
General note | "Illustrative hymns": pages [141]-301. |
Bibliography note | "Supplementary reading" at end of chapter. Bibliography: pages 137-140. |
