V.1: What happens to a young black boy in Depression stricken North Carolina when he learns he is the direct descendant of a Confederate legend? Follow David Jonathan Sawyer on a fabulous journey down the Rose Hill Road, past sunny fields white with cotton, into his favorite swamp, where he learns his family's dark and tragic secret. A boy who would rather play with June bugs and get into mischief must confront the terrifying past and the ominous present, where segregation is enforced by the same Klansmen who would dig his father a well, or sell him a cow. To venture from the swamp with his burden is to see the world in a different light. Each challenge, insult, or danger adds to his strength and wisdom until, like his famous ancestor, he can prevail against impossible odds.
