Abstract | This is the book for the ordinary listener, especially anyone who has only recently discovered the delights of musical appreciation. Not only to him however, is this book addressed; it will also be found of inestimable value by students, teachers, school librarians and amateur musicians. The development of musical forms, the characters and careers of the great composers, the circumstances of composition of individual works, social habits and "the spirit of the time" - the readers will find in these 500-odd pages all the background they need for a full appreciation of any music they are likely to hear on record, on the air, in church or in the concert hall. Enjoyment of music is based, of course, in the last resort, on the senses; but it may be increased a hundredfold by the possession of the right kind of knowledge. The aim of this important book is to give information rather than criticism - the latter the reader may supply for himself, if he is equipped with the facts and capable of attentive listening. Color plates of "period" interest and a striking selection of authentic portraits and photographs of composers add value to the text. |
