General note | First ed. of the original, of which but few copies are known. Translated into Spanish in 1681 and then into English in 1684 (where the author's name appears as Esquemeling) and subsequently into French in 1686 (with the name written Oexmelin). The work went through numerous editions in its various versions and formed the foundation for many of the histories and romances of the buccaneers published during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. |
