a| Intended to help researchers of the musical instrument industry, these books are the first index to collect citations from the more than 20 volumes of this preeminent 19th- and 20th-century American music trade publication. The author has assembled an exhaustive list of over 3,500 citations of articles, illustrations, and advertisements related to the musical instrument industry between the start of The Musical Courier in 1880 until 1940 when the editors of The Musical Courier had changed the focus of their periodical. This two-volume edition contains citations to editorials, obituaries, announcements, scholarly articles, and investigational articles of importance to musical instruments and affecting music in general. The first volume presents citations alphabetically under subject headers common to the musical instrument industry of the time, while the second volume organizes citations by the periodical's volume number. Citations on many different topics related to musical instruments are indexed, such as construction practices, descriptions, tools, exhibitions and collections, new technologies, and laws and legal actions relating to the industry. More than 400 citations on companies and manufacturers of instruments; over 700 entries on patents, trade marks, and designs for new or improved instruments; and over 200 entries on musicians and composers are included. Additionally, researchers of African-American music and culture, women's rights, John Philip Sousa, Antonín Dvorák, and the influence of the rise of Nazi Germany on music in Europe will find significant articles. This substantial reference concludes with four appendixes that cross-reference citations by company name, occupation of persons and companies, locations, and patent numbers, providing greater accessibility to researchers.
