Abstract |
Elliott Carter (born 1908) is widely regarded as one of the foremost composers of our time. On the occasion of Carter's one-hundredth birthday, this volume presents a large selection of previously unpublished letters, lectures, and facsimiles of music manuscripts from the Paul Sacher Foundation and other archives. The extensively annotated documents provide new insights into Carter's life as an American composer in an international context, tracing his tentative beginnings in the 1920s and 30s, his steady rise to fame, and his artistic friendships with some of the leading musicians of the last hundred years. |
