a| This dissertation is principally an annotated bibliography of the works for horn, voice and piano from 1830-1850 (Chapter II). The annotations of the songs include bibliographic references and other information about the composer, the song, and the origin of the copy of the song. Each annotation includes a description chart and comments which elaborate upon the song's characteristics and programmability: key, length, duration, voice type, difficulty level for each player and a musical quality rating. The difficulty levels are IV--Easy, V--Medium, and VI--Difficult. The musical quality ratings are I--Poor, II--Below Average, III--Average, IV--Above Average and V--Superior. An incipit of the opening of the song and the first few measures of the entrance of the voice is included. Chapter III includes the analyses of nine selected works from 1830-1986 which demonstrate the level of musical sophistication of songs from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The information is similar to that of Chapter II but goes into much more depth in all areas. Each of the nine entries includes a biography of the composer, bibliographic information, a full translation of each song and performance comments. The introductory and conclusion chapters serve to provide an historical overview of the genre, a discussion of Schubert's "Auf dem Strom" for horn, voice and piano, and a summary of the findings in the annotated bibliography. The reader is provided with lists of songs for the various difficulty and musical quality rating levels in the final chapter (IV). Lists of all the works for this genre found in reference sources are noted in the Appendices A-E.
