Abstract |
Documentary examining undocumented immigrant children in North Carolina and their rights to higher education. Alien minors are currently ineligible for in-state tuition, resulting in greater numbers of uneducated young adults. Several young Mexican immigrants describe the challenges they faced as they entered North Carolina schools. State Representative Rick Glazier discusses NC House Bill 1183, which sought to allow undocumented high school graduates who have spent at least four years in North Carolina schools to qualify for in-state tuition. The bill failed after received a negative response from the public. R. Allen Rippy, University of North Carolina Wilmington, Trustee, discusses the importance of accessible education for alien minors. Also discussed is the Development, Relief and Education of Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, introduced to U.S. senate in November 2005. |
