Papalas 520 3 The purpose of this thesis is to examine flaws in the Spartan military system during the Archidamian War (431-422 BC). Many historians have criticized Sparta for their lack of innovation, energy, and flexibility, claiming that these flaws cost the Spartans success in the Archidamian War. This thesis will argue that while Sparta should have examined new infantry techniques and pursued more aggressive strategies, no method of warfare, no matter how creative, would have changed the outcome of the war. To attain a complete victory, Sparta had to face the Athenians at sea. With no navy and a complete lack of money, Sparta could not hope to match Athens. The only choice left to them was old-fashioned hoplite warfare. Had they waited and built the necessary infrastructure, they might have ended the war swiftly. 504 Includes bibliographical references (leaves 93-98). 651 0 Greece |xHistory |yPeloponnesian War, 431-404 B.C. |=^A17921 651 0 Sparta (Extinct city) |xHistory. |=^A158735 651 0 Athens (Greece) |xHistory. |=^A22567 650 0 Military art and science |zGreece |xHistory. |=^A1032605 650 0 Strategy. |=^A40371 650 7 Military art and science. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01020874 650 7 Strategy. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01134406 651 7 Greece. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01208380 |?UNAUTHORIZED 651 7 Greece |zAthens. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01204474 |?UNAUTHORIZED 651 7 Greece |zSparta (Extinct city) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01896940 |?UNAUTHORIZED 647 7 Peloponnesian War |c(Greece : |d431-404 B.C.) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01353967 648 7 431-404 B.C |2fast 655 7 theses. |2aat |0(CStmoGRI)aatgf300028028 655 7 dissertations. |2aat |0(CStmoGRI)aatgf300028029 655 7 doctoral dissertations. |2aat |0(CStmoGRI)aatgf300312076 655 7 masters theses. |2aat |0(CStmoGRI)aatgf300077723 655 7 Academic theses. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01726453 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 655 7 Academic theses. |2lcgft 655 7 Thèses et écrits académiques. |2rvmgf |0(CaQQLa)RVMGF-000001173 700 1 Papalas, Anthony J., |d1939- |edegree supervisor. |=^A321052 710 2 East Carolina University. |bDepartment of History. |=^A636991 856 41 |zAccess via ScholarShip |uhttp://hdl.handle.net/10342/10159 949 Click on web address |wasis |hjoyner101 949 Click on web address |wasis |hhsl111 994 C0 |bERE 596 1 4 998 1272415 998 1272415
