Abstract The Flying Dutchman is cursed, both the spectral ship and her Captain condemned, roaming the sea until Judgment Day. Every seven years the Dutchman is cast upon the shore; if he can find a wife who will be true to him, he will be released. Senta, unmarried daughter of captain Daland, is engaged to Erik, but she dreams of being the one who will be the Dutchman's salvation, who by her fidelity saves him.
