It also seeks to explore how the African American community utilized the limited resources at its disposal to elevate its status within American society. The spirit of self-determination and racial uplift are embedded in the African American heritage. The tradition of initiating efforts to improve the African American community is a hallmark of black life. Therefore, this thesis also seeks to help correct a misconception about African Americans' participation in their educational development, economic advancement, social progress, and maturity. The overall aim of the study is not necessarily to make the contemporary concept of philanthropy fit into this historical period, but rather to understand how African Americans defined their own concept of philanthropy and how they used this concept to improve their lives. 504 Includes bibliographical references (leaves 93-99). 650 0 African Americans |zNorth Carolina |zCraven County |xCharities |xHistory. |=^A2035 650 0 African Americans |zNorth Carolina |zEdgecombe County |xCharities |xHistory. |=^A2035 650 0 African Americans |zNorth Carolina |zWarren County |xCharities |xHistory. |=^A2035 650 0 Charities |zNorth Carolina |zCraven County |xHistory. |=^A12355 650 0 Charities |zNorth Carolina |zEdgecombe County |xHistory. |=^A12355 650 0 Charities |zNorth Carolina |zWarren County |xHistory. |=^A12355 650 7 African Americans |xCharities. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00799574 650 7 Charities. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00852404 651 7 North Carolina |zCraven County. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01204549 |?UNAUTHORIZED 651 7 North Carolina |zEdgecombe County. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01206610 |?UNAUTHORIZED 651 7 North Carolina |zWarren County. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01221594 |?UNAUTHORIZED 655 7 Academic theses. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01726453 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 655 7 Academic theses. |2lcgft 655 7 Thèses et écrits académiques. |2rvmgf |0(CaQQLa)RVMGF-000001173 700 1 Dennard, David C. |q(David Charles), |d1946- |edegree supervisor. |=^A1174606 710 2 East Carolina University. |bDepartment of History. |=^A636991 856 41 |zAccess via ScholarShip |uhttp://hdl.handle.net/10342/10274 949 Click on web address |wasis |hjoyner101 949 Click on web address |wasis |hhsl111 994 C0 |bERE 596 1 4 998 1271457
