| Abstract | "The old organ, which for more than a century has done such splendid service in the Home Church, was removed today. ..." Oddly enough, this quote from the June 24, 1910, entry in the diary for Home Moravian Church in Salem, North Carolina, marks not the organ's demise, but the beginning of a prolonged restoration effort to save the magnificent instrument that David Tannenberg completed in 1800. The historical importance of Tannenberg's organ was recognized at the time of its dismantling and it was not destroyed, but it remained in storage in various locations for eighty-eight years. Since its restoration, nearly two hundred years of the organ's history have been deciphered and analyzed. With meticulous care and understanding, the organ has been returned to its original state, musically and visually, and it now stands in Old Salem as a tribute to the talent and craftsmanship of a master organ builder, David Tannenberg, and the remarkable musical achievement he created in the North Carolina backcountry. |

The recitals, symposium, and other special events to celebrate the restored organ were held March 19-21, 2004 in the Old Salem Visitor Center's James A. Gray, Jr. Auditorium. |
