Frank Spencer Briggs papers contain a typescript copy of the Frank S. Briggs journal, a photocopy of the original journal, and several pictures depicting life in the Yukon Gold Rush. Briggs's journal, kept from 28 April 1898 to 18 March 1899, describes his journey with his partner Joe Wolvan to the Yukon Territory from Oroville, Calif., and his first months as a prospector on his claim. Entries describe their travels via steamboat to Victoria, B.C., and later to the Yukon Territory via Teslin Lake; their stops at Ashland, Or., where Briggs mentions watching newly recruited soldiers boarding a train heading off to the Spanish-American War; Tacoma, Wash., were he attended patriotic exercises for the Spanish-American War at Wright's Park; Oriental, B.C.; Vancouver, B.C., where they saw American soldiers who were sent to help the NorthWest Mounted Police enforce the law at Dawson; and Dawson, Yukon, Canada, where they bought supplies. |

Biographical note | Frank Spencer Briggs (b. September 15, 1870) was a prospector in the Yukon gold rush. A native of the Finger Lakes region of western New York, he moved to Oroville, Butte County, Calif., to marry Isabelle Reynolds (b. June 15, 1873), also a native of the Finger Lakes region. The couple had two children, Augusta and Mary. |
