Collection consists of a volume that contains Dr. Williams' daybook and accompanying account book. Also included is a list of birth, death, and sale dates for his slaves. Daybook entries concern Dr. Williams' practice and plantation. He includes the names of debtors and creditors, amounts owed, and descriptions of services rendered or materials sold. Medical services include doctor's visits, cutting gums, tooth extracting, cupping, purging, "midwifing," and making a coffin. Other services were mostly those performed by Williams' slaves for members of the community. Materials bought from Dr. Williams include various medicines as well as foodstuffs, tobacco, and wool. Accompanying the daybook is an indexed, name-by-name record of most of the debits and credits created in the daybook transactions. |
