Blanche Hardee Rives papers, 1905-1974.

Scope and content The bulk of the papers concern the Methodist Protestant Church, which later became the United Methodist Church. Correspondence includes letters from Arminius Gray Dixon, Methodist Protestant minister, and Llewellyn J. Coppedge, missionary to the Belgian Congo. Topics include Dixon's ministerial career in Halifax County; the Methodist Union and the Methodist Protestant Church; attempts to establish a Methodist Protestant ministry in Rocky Mount, N.C.; Reverend H. Morrison and Motte Martin; and living conditions in the Congo. Other materials concern the 111th annual conference of the Methodist Protestant Church, histories of Weldon and Eden Methodist churches, Whitaker's Chapel, and North Carolina Wesleyan College Founders' Day. Other correspondence concerns routine farm life and social activities at Halifax County, N.C. Littleton Female College materials include a photograph, catalog, class notebook, and pamphlet on the history of the college. The notebook also lists names and ages of students in the Hardee School. Other materials reflect Blanche Rives' membership in the Frank M. Parker Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Halifax County Historical Association, Littleton College Memorial Association, Eden Methodist Protestant Church Ladies Aid Society, Halifax County Home Demonstration Club, and Enfield Order of the Eastern Star.

Biographical noteBlanche Hardee Rives, wife of Ralph Cooper Rives, resided in Enfield, Halifax County, N.C. She attended the Littleton Female College and taught at the Hardee School. She participated in Methodist Protestant/United Methodist Church activities, the Hardrawee Home Demonstration Club, the Halifax County Home Demonstration Club, Order of the Eastern Star, Halifax County Historical Association, Northeastern North Carolina Branch of the English-Speaking Union, Frank M. Parker Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and Littleton College Memorial Association. Her son, Dr. Ralph Hardee Rives, was a professor of English at East Carolina University.
