Scope and content Photocopies of correspondence discuss the fall of Bataan to the Japanese Army. Topics include conditions of the United States Army before the Japanese attack, the order of withdrawal, and Colonel Lilly's ability as a leader. Other items specify the Japanese policy towards prisoners of war and depict the Japanese General Tomoyuki Yamashita's background, war record, and his hanging. Other correspondence includes commendations to the Scouts of the 57th Infantry, congratulations to Colonel Lilly on his safe return home, and condolences to the family on the death of Lt. Edmund J. Lilly, III, who was killed in action in Korea.

Biographical noteColonel Edmund Jones Lilly, Jr. (b. 1894), a native of Fayetteville, N.C. , was a United States artillery officer in World War I and World War II. He served as commander, executive officer of the regiment, and regimental commander of the 57th Philippine Scouts. He experienced the Bataan Death March and was a Prisoner of War until 1945. After serving in France as the inspector general of the American Graves Registration Plan, he returned to the United States and was assigned to the Inspector General section at Fort Sam Houston, Tex., where he served until his retirement.
