Abstract The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence. Topics include Chinese social practices and customs; religious activities of Protestant missionaries in China; annual evangelistic reports for the Chengchow mission field; Japanese struggle for and occupation of Tsining; Japanese occupation of Kaifeng; missionary refugee work in Chengchow; air raids on Chengchow; occupation of Chengchow by the Japanese; local Chinese military policy; social and economic conditions, especially during the Chinese Civil War; conditions under Chinese Communist rule in Kwangsi Province and its effect on missionary activities; and missionary work in Kaohsiung, Formosa (now Taiwan) and the effect of the American presence on the Taiwanese. Also includes diaries, in which Murray describes the Japanese occupation of Chengchow, missionary work during the Chinese Communist occupation of Kwangsi Province, and her escape from China.

Biographical noteMargaret Catherine Murray, a native of Kenansville, N.C., was a Southern Baptist missionary in Chengchow, China, where she experienced the turmoil of the Second Sino-Japanese War. Murrary and her co-workers became actively involved with refugee relief work and remained so until 1944. After fleeing China, she returned to the Orient in 1954 and completed her last years of missionary service on Taiwan in 1959.
