Norman Player Farrior papers, 1912-1965.

Abstract Collection contains correspondence, diaries, clippings, plays, articles, and other materials. Diary entries pertain to Farrior's experiences as a missionary in Morelia, Mexico; life in eastern North Carolina; student life at Union Theological Seminary at Richmond, Va.; the movement of troops from France at the end of World War I; and preaching in various localities in North Carolina. Letters from Protestant missionaries in Mexico, China, and the Congo describe the conditions in those areas and their evangelizing efforts. Correspondence and clippings concern Homer Ferguson's views on organized labor and the views of Hubert H. Humphrey, Allen J. Ellender, and B. Everett Jordon on civil rights legislation. Also contains Farrior's letters to the editors of religious magazines, some of which discuss the merger of the northern and southern Presbyterian churches; church materials; a short history of the Mount Zion Presbyterian Church of Rose Hill, N.C.; a description of Presbyterian Church activities in central Florida; an article recounting the history of Presbyterians in Duplin County; description of the bicentennial celebration and history of the Grove Presbyterian Church, Kenansville, N.C.; a historical sketch of Duplin County; plays pertaining to Farrior's activities as a missionary; and a genealogy of the Farrior family.

Biographical noteNorman P. Farrior (1890-1970) was a Presbyterian minister and missionary. A native of Duplin County, N.C., he served in the Navy during World War I; was a missionary to Mexico; worked in missions to Kentucky, West Virginia, and Florida; and served as pastor of several churches in Duplin County, N.C. Throughout his life Farrior maintained an interest in ecclesiastical matters, submitting articles to religious publications and corresponding with missionaries in Mexico, China, and the Congo along with ministers in home missions in the United States. Farrior also corresponded with numerous Congressmen and newspaper editors concerning public issues of his day.
