a| Educator and academic administrator Gloria Dean Randle Scott was born on April 14, 1938 in Houston, Texas. She attended Blackshear Elementary and Jack Yates Secondary School where she graduated in 1955. Scott received her B.A. degree and M.A. degree in zoology in 1959 and 1960 respectively and her Ph.D. degree in higher education from Indiana University in 1965. Scott's career in education began as a research associate in genetics and embryology at Indiana University Institution for Psychiatric Research, before she became a biology professor. Scott made history by becoming the first African American National President of the Girl Scouts in 1975. A member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority, Scott held positions as dean of students at Knoxville College, and vice president of Clark College in Atlanta. After ten years at Clark College, Scott became the eleventh president of Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1987.
