Abstract |
College president James Edward Cheek was born December 4, 1932, in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. He earned his B.A. degree from Shaw University in 1955; his M.Div. degree from Colgate Rochester University in 1958; and his Ph.D. degree from Drew University in 1962. Prior to college, Cheek served in the U. S. Air Force in Korea in 1951. He was named president of Shaw University in 1963. In 1968, he was appointed president of Howard University. During Cheek's twenty-year tenure at Howard, the student population increased by 3,500 and the number of colleges, research programs, faculty, and Ph.D. programs grew dramatically. Under Cheek, Howard's budget increased from $43 million to $417 million. He was named Washingtonian of the Year twice while he served as president of Howard, and was awarded the nation's highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Cheek passed away January 12, 2010 at age 77. |
