| Abstract |
Governor and lawyer Deval Patrick was born on July 31, 1956 in Chicago, Illinois. After earning a scholarship to Milton Academy in Boston, Patrick attended Harvard University, earning his A.B. degree in 1978. Following a year-long Rockefeller Fellowship in Africa, he was accepted to Harvard Law School, where he earned his J.D. degree in 1982. The next year, he joined the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, remaining there until becoming a partner with the Boston law firm of Hill & Barlow, P.C. In 1994, he was appointed by President Bill Clinton to be assistant attorney general in charge of the Civil Rights Division. In 1997, Patrick served as general counsel to Texaco, and as executive vice president, general counsel and secretary to the Coca-Cola Company. The only African-American governor of Massachusetts, Patrick was elected Governor of Massachusetts in 2006 and reelected in 2010. He joined Bain Capital in 2015 as a managing director. |
