Abstract Educator Frances Louise Dancy Hooks was born on February 23, 1927 in Memphis Tennessee. Hooks attended St. Anthony La Rose Elementary School and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1944. She attended Howard University, Fisk University and graduated from Wilberforce University in 1949. Hooks taught second grade in a Shelby County, Tennessee Rosenwald school and married Reverend Benjamin Hooks in 1951. Hooks put her career as teacher and guidance counselor on hold for her husband and became his assistant secretary, advisor and traveling companion. In 1977, when her husband became executive director of the NAACP, Hooks helped organize NAACP women by creating Women in the NAACP (WIN) which she formed in 1980 with Earleen Bolden. WIN raised money for emergency relief with fashion shows and social events. Hooks co-founded the People Power Project which promoted dialog between the races. Hooks passed away on January 14, 2016 at age 88.
