Abstract |
Industrial designer Charles A. Harrison was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on September 23, 1931. He received his B.F.A. degree in 1954 from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Drafted into the Army, Harrison was trained in cartography and sent to re-map West Germany after World War II. He was the only black draftsman in the topographic unit. For graduate school, he obtained his M.S. degree in industrial design. After various design jobs, he worked at Bob Podall Designs and helped to redesign the View-Master in 1959. Harrison began his thirty-two year career with Sears Roebuck and Company in 1961 as a freelance designer and rose to design department manager. Beginning in 1993, Harrison taught industrial design at the University of Illinois and Columbia College Chicago. He volunteered with the Evanston Arts Council and served as a senior adviser for the Organization of Black Designers. |
