Abstract Civic leader and city official Dorothy Jackson was born in Akron, Ohio on November 9, 1933. She attended Akron's Robinson Elementary School and East High where she graduated in 1951. After high school, Jackson worked in a local grocery store and attended night classes. Forced to quit her job and drop out of classes when her mother became ill, she spent the subsequent four years caring for her mother who died in 1952. She also cared for her brother who died in 1956. Following the death of her father in 1957, Jackson worked as a secretary for Goodwill Industries where she rose to become assistant public relations director.
