General noteA reprinting of the expanded edition of "The monarchick tragedies", "Doomes-day", and "A paraenesis to the Prince", with "Jonathan" added. "Dooms-day, or, The great day of the Lords iudgement" has separate dated title page, pagination, and register. Within this, "Ionathan" has separate dated title page. Cf. National Library of Scotland.
General noteThis copy contains a fine impression of the rare portrait of Alexander by William Marshall. On the portrait is the manuscript inscription 'Liber Fra: Kinaston ex dono Nobilissimi Authoris'. Sir Francis Kinnaston (1587-1642) was an influential English poet of the court of Charles I. The inscription is of some bibliographical importance as it indicates clearly that the portrait was issued with the book. It had been argued that the rarity of the portrait was a consequence of its having been issued separately and Greg was doubtful that it was printed to accompany the book. This copy also contains an eighteenth-century facsimile of the portrait. Cf. National Library of Scotland.
